Minister of Education Dr. Nicolette Henry, received a delegation led by Barbados Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Sandra Husbands, and included David Commissiong, Ambassador of Barbados to the Caribbean Community and the Associates of Caribbean States; and Kay Sealy, Director of Foreign Trade Barbados.
The meeting took place at Minister Henry’s Brickdam office
During the meeting, the Ministers discussed possible areas of cooperation that will be mutually beneficial to both parties. Minister Husbands noted that there is a Joint Commission to which both Guyana and Barbados are members.
Minister Husbands said that Guyana and Barbados should work collaboratively to ensure, among other things, that the school system in both countries is producing critical thinkers.
Minister Husbands posited that this is necessary if the Caribbean youths are to function effectively in the global space that is constantly evolving.
Dr. Henry said it is important that greater emphasis be placed on teacher education to ensure that children are exposed to the best possible teaching.
Additionally, she informed the Barbadian delegation that Guyana is in the process of reforming its curriculum to cater for modern and futuristic approaches to teaching.
Minister Henry also underscored the importance of the inculcation of ‘soft and people skills’ for youths in the two countries. She explained that these skills aid in ensuring that they can function effectively in the world of work.
Ministers Henry and Husbands have committed to meeting again as they look ahead to better cooperation and collaboration.
