The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered an inquest to determine if anyone should be held criminally liable for the death of 40-year-old Nigel Lowe, who died after he was allegedly beaten by a mob of about 20 men who had accused him of stealing from residents in the community.
According to reports, Lowe, called ‘Harry’, a mason of Joe Singh Drive, Sophia, Greater, Georgetown, was stripped naked and tied to a utility pole, where he was beaten mercilessly on May 8, 2013. Reports suggest that the man was attacked by a group of men after a man in the area saw him in his yard and began hollering for thief.
Police in a press release had said that investigations were being conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death of the man “whose nude body was found tied to a utility pole. The body, according to the release, bore marks of violence “that appear to be chop wounds.”
There have been no reports of anyone being charged in relation to the death of Lowe.
However, last week a notice was published in the daily newspapers by the Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court requesting that 13 witnesses, including three policemen attend the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts on Friday to testify in the inquest proceedings.
They include Corporal Sohan Ramdat of the Sparendaam Police Station; Detective Corporal Patrick Benjamin of Cove and John Divisional Head Quarters, Detective Corporal Kester Moriah of the Turkeyen Police Station; Jennifer Lowe; Viola Chrisholm; Benette Hall; Sherry Punch; Lindo James; Clarence Layne; Michael Layne; Rohee James; Trayon Garnette; and Tondica Tucker.
The proceedings will be heard before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
