Firefighters who allegedly stole from passengers of crashed aircraft released on bail
The fourteen firefighters who allegedly stole from passengers aboard the Fly Jamaica aircraft that crash-landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport last Saturday, were each released on $100,000 station bail yesterday.
The team is stationed at the airport, and includes supervisors with over 15 years of experience and junior ranks who were arrested immediately after the incident. The stolen items included tablets, cell phones and colognes, which were stolen from the pilot and passengers. Some of the items have been recovered.
Following investigations, a file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. It is likely that they will be arraigned before a Magistrate today. Kaieteur News had previously reported that one of the ranks handed over two cellular phones he had already stashed in his vehicle.
“That was when we realized that it was more serious,” an upset Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said.
The Chief Fire Officer continued, “They were dishonest; there is no long and short of it. We unreservedly apologise (but) this is not (the behaviour of) the rank and file members of the Guyana Fire Service. This is clearly a fringe element of the Fire Service…persons, including supervisors, who could forget morals and principles.”
