With a female pastor at its helm, the Shekina International Tabernacle yesterday commissioned a branch in Guyana at Lot 167 Paiyuka Lane, Guyhoc Park, Georgetown.
The tabernacle which has branches in Maryland and New Jersey, U.S.A, and Haiti is now being headed in Guyana by Pastor Delores Inverary.
Pastor Inverary was inaugurated yesterday. The church is located at the bottom flat of her home.
Through a simple, yet significant ceremony that was attended by scores or persons, the mission of the church was highlighted. Patrons were treated to singing and citation of verses from the Holy Bible.
Pastor Inverary, 69, is a former teacher and nurse who had resided in the U.S.A. Upon her return home, she observed that her community was plagued by many social ills and is determined to do something about it.
She explained that from her observation, there is an increase in teenage pregnancy and drug abuse as well as loitering by young people.
“We want to get them off the streets and back into the classrooms. So I use my own finances to pay for extra lessons for some of them.
“My mission is to save the young people of Guyana through the word of God, so they can be better young men and women who can lead the world in the next century.” The pastor explained that she would usually visit various schools and request a list of students who are not academically on par.
Once provided with that information, she would enroll them into lessons. Pastor Inverary spoke highly of 15 of those students who, according to her, excelled at the recently concluded Secondary School Entrance Examinations (SSEE) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC).
The church body is headed by Apostle Dr. Patience Oti, a Nigerian-American citizen.
Apostle Oti, Pastor Inverary, and a team have visited many countries including Haiti, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Guyana, Brazil, Ukraine, where they have served the poor. This venture is done through the Shekina Charities which has provided food, health workshops and medical outreaches to those in need.
Shekina Charities has also been a part of teams and have gone to Cameroon and the Dominican Republic. Shekina Charities was started in 2000, while in 2015 the Shekina House of Worship was set up in the village of Souffrit, Grand Goave, Haiti.
As it relates to the programming for the church, Sunday is dedicated to youth fellowship and Sunday school; Tuesdays are for Bible study and prayer meeting/family counselling. Every Monday and Wednesday, Pastor Inverary would go into the streets and do ministries.
The mission statement of the church is to “Save the lost through the world of God.”
