–guard, 72, locked up for two days says he was wrongly accused, wants back his bike and bail money
All that 72-year-old security guard Dindial Durga wants from the police is his name cleared, and his bike and his $30,000 in cash bail returned.
But to get them back, police at the Golden Grove Station will have to find out exactly who made off with a pouch that contained money, a firearm and documents that belonged to an attorney on October 15.
That was also the day that Mr. Durga, who has reportedly received commendations from the security firm where he works, said he found himself being wrongly accused of theft.
Video footage given to Kaieteur News shows a car exiting Fourth Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, and turning onto the Diamond access road. As the driver heads west along the access road, a pouch, which was left on the car trunk, falls to the roadway. Seconds later, a male cyclist, who had also just exited Fourth Avenue and was riding behind the car, picks up the pouch and rides off.
But the matter didn’t end there.
At around 10.00 hrs on October 22, Mr. Durga was at his Lot 589 Fourth Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme home, when someone called at his gate. He said that on looking out, he saw a man, whom he later identified as an attorney.
“The man asked if I could look at a video. I said that I couldn’t because I recently had an operation for my eye. He asked if I have a bike, and I said yes, and he ask if he can come in my yard to see the bike, and I say no.”
Mr. Dindial said that at the time, he had overseas guests, and fearing that he was being targeted for robbery, locked his gate and told his wife to secure the home.
“Ten minutes later about five policemen, including two with big guns, came at my gate. They tell me I under arrest. I say ‘for what’ and they say ‘a pouch fall off a car and you pick it up,’ Mr. Durga said.
He was also allegedly told that the thief had a red bicycle.
Mr. Durga said that his wife eventually opened the gate and the ranks entered and searched his home. They found nothing, but then searched a store-room where he has his two bicycles, including a red one.
They bring out the locked (red) bike, and tell me to go in the police vehicle.”
At the station, Dindial said that he was told about the fallen pouch, which reportedly contained “lots of money, a firearm, and documents.
He alleged that the ranks said that he was the culprit.
The incident allegedly occurred at around on October 22 at around 10.00 hrs. Mr. Dindal insists that he would have been taking a nap at that time before going back out on his 12-hour shift, which starts at 18.00 hrs.
And while the bicycle seen in the video and one of his bikes were both red, he said that the one that the thief in the video used “has a bigger sprocket and fancy gears,” than his.
Despite his protests, Dindial said he was placed in a cell, “with a set of young men,” for two days. He was then released on $30,000 station bail. Meanwhile, he was instructed to report at the station daily.
He alleged that three weeks later, he received a call from a rank who said he should bring the receipt to be signed. He said the rank informed him he would then be able to collect his bail.
But at the station, the rank allegedly told Dindial that he would have to discuss the return of bail with a senior rank.
A frustrated Dindial said that after that, he was repeatedly told to “come back.”
“Now, last Friday, I go, and was told “don’t come back, they will tell me when to come back.
“All I want is my money and my bike.”
Insisting that he is being wrongly accused, Dindial said that he has been repeatedly commended by his employees, and has received two awards for the year from the security firm where he works.
Contacted by Kaieteur News, a police source said that the matter is still under investigation, and that matter of Mr. Dindial’s bike and bail is being handled at the Brickdam Police Station.
