Day two of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMRSC) Ignite meet was truly thrilling with some outstanding driving by the top drivers in Guyana and the region which had fans raving throughout the day.
In the anticipated radicals’ races, seasoned campaigner Calvin Ming (GUY) showed his control over the racecar as he won two of the three radical races, resetting the lap record during each victory.
In the first win, Ming beat Team Mohamed’s Matthew Truelove circuit record time of 33.3 seconds by three thousandths of a second (33.297 seconds) in a commanding display of driving.
In the second Radical race, Kristian Jeffrey (Guy), who started in eighth position due to the reversed grid rule of the radicals, overcame the entire field including a last lap drift past of Calvin Ming on the gooseneck for the win.
Ming, who was on pole for the final radical race, led the field from start to finish and Jeffrey was unable to get past his fellow countryman who lowered the circuit record once again with a blazing fast lap of 33.121 seconds.
In Group four action, Mark Vieira (GUY) entered the contest at the summit of the points table with defending Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) four wheel champion Andrew King (GUY) second and Mark Maloney (BAR) third. But two outstanding wins and a second place finish by King allowed him to overtake Vieira to win the now stand alone group four (no Awd and 2wd drive classes) title.
Vieira’s finishes of fifth in races two and three and his third place in race one was not good enough to see him become the third Guyanese to become a CMRC group four champion.
King, who missed the Jamaica leg of the four-part CMRC, explained to Kaieteur sport that participation and consistency are key ingredients to his success. He thanked his team for their hard work and noted disappointment in his performances at Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Wallerfield circuit but was happy to put on a magnificent show at his home track.
In the bikes, Team Mohamed’s Enterprise was most successful with three first place finishes, two seconds and two thirds in the Supersport and Superstock classes combined. It would have easily been a one-two-three finish in each of the races but Richard Cooper and Harry Truelove both fell off their cycle in the opening race and were unable to recover from the nasty collision. The seasoned riders thrilled fans and they were a joy to watch on the track.
Kristian Boodoosingh (T&T) officially copped two of three group three races, while the unofficial results indicate that he completed a sweep after winning the third race as well. In the first showdown around the oval, Boodoosingh in his Evo overcame a collision with Danny Persaud while going around the first turn to eventually come out on top; performances which he emulated throughout the day.
Shan Seejattan (Guy) in his Honda Civic also had a clean sweep but in the group two class. CMRC leader Marc Gill (T&T) did not finish (DNF) in races one and two but his fourth place crossing in the second race was enough to see him win a second title.
Team Wreckers (GUY) had a good day at the track with Anand Ramchand winning two of the starlet cup races while finishing second in the third, while Adrian Fernandes amassed enough points to unofficially be the winner of the sports tuner (group 1) local class.
The official points standing and winners in the 2018 CMRC series will be featured in tomorrow’s issue of Kaieteur Sport.
