A 43-year-old fisherman from Alness Village, Corentyne, who ventured out to sea with four other fishermen on Tuesday is said to have suffered seizures and fallen overboard.
His body was hauled up from the chilling Corentyne waters through a Bushlot Village Channel by his fellow fisherfolk. However, relatives of the dead man believe that he was killed over monies that he owed.
Dead is RadeshNarine called “Boonga.”
His brother, JaidarryNarineandother relatives have expressed suspicion about his death after reportedly receiving conflicting stories about his death.
One fisherman reportedly claimed that Narine suffered a seizure and jumped overboard while another said “he trip out and fall overboard.”
However, his brother told reporters that during all the years that his brother worked at sea, “he never catch fits so that is something new to we.”
He recalled that it was on Tuesday (6th November) that some fishermen with whom his brother worked, passed by his home at Port Mourant and asked “where ‘Boonga’deh.”
He reportedly told them that he has no knowledge of his brother’s whereabouts, “Me tell dem me na see am cuz mostly he does deh pick up cast net. Anyways, demseh how ‘Boonga’tek money from demfuh go sea and me tell dem me na know about that. He pass with a long piece wood in he hand and he seh when he get am he go beat Boonga.”
Narine added that later that day a friend of his informed him that his brother had gone out to sea with the same individual and crew that asked for his sibling earlier that day.
“Somebody tell me sehdem hold the man (brother) on he shirt and walk he and carry he to the boat.”
It wasn’t until Friday afternoon, three days later that they received a call informing them that “the man a trip out and ketch fits and the man jump overboard” but he opined, “If a man ketch fits and jump overboard under 50ft of water you can’t find that man and if you know that man does trip out the best tingthey couddado is to tie the man down in the boat and not loose that man. We hear dem find he body and was bringing it out at Bushlot so we go. Dem bring am out dead but we seh something na right, something strange happen deh.”
Narine, who is the eldest brother, relayed that a young fisherman who told him that he heard his brother screaming “don’t beat me, don’t beat me.” The young fisherman reportedly told him that he was on the cabin of the boat when he heard the screams and shortly after “Boonga” went overboard.
“He say how a man (brother) dive and gone over and them tell he come on back.
“Me know that water currant and them telling me my brother dive under the boat, me na believe that. Them claim them tie some rope and dive overboard and feel underneath the water and find me brother, me still na believe that story, me think something happen and me want the police to investigate this matter”, he added.
This publication was informed by the brother that “Boonga” had not ventured out to fish in over a year hence it is unlikely that he willingly went along with the other fishermen to fish at sea.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News understands that two fishermen were detained briefly at the Whim Police Station but they were released the same day.
A post mortem examination is expected to be done sometime this week.
