The harsh reality of life is that at some point we all suffer from anxiety and depression. For some, anxiety and depression can become overbearing to the point in which they have suicidal thoughts and eventually act on them.
During the course of last week, 15 individuals on the Essequibo Coast, were trained in Cognitive behavioral therapy. This psychotherapy treatment includes a number of techniques, designed to relive an individual of depression, hence boosting their happiness.
The three day programme which commenced last week Monday, was spearheaded by Mr. Krish Nath; a qualified psychologist attached to the British Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Physiotherapy [BABCP]. Krish Nath, along with three highly trained psychologists from the United Kingdom, took up the task in training 15 participants from the Essequibo Coast.
Kaieteur News understands that the project targeted 48 persons from across the three counties in Guyana; 16 from each county. In Region Two, the team networked with the Sunrise Center under the Guyana Foundation; a nonprofit organization with the objective of tackling suicides in Guyana. Persons representing the Centre, the Pomeroon, schools and even Region One, were offered a package which included 10 strategies to effectively combat anxiety and depression.
According to Mr. Krish Nath, anxiety is a normal bodily response. He explained that our brain is designed to prepare for danger, hence the anxiety response. What the human brain isn’t designed for, he noted, is to have to cope with multi-layers of stresses, which triggers mental health problems.
“So when people get over loaded, when people are not given the right attention, when people are losing sight of direction for their life and they feel insecure and don’t know where their future lies, it causes the brain to trigger.”
According to Mr. Krish Nath, the training will help the participants to identify solutions that can help a person overcome the difficulties of mental health. He noted that Cognitive behavioral therapy is basically looking at treating problems in the “here and now.” This he explained is a mindfulness practice where individuals get in touch with body and mind. He further explaiend that it helps in calming a person; helping the individual feel less anxious, thus releasing anxiety.
Commenting on the three-day training, he explained, “There was a package of 10 strategies over the past three days; problem solving and cognitive restructuring, changing the way you think.
Depressed people act on thoughts and beliefs. If you can change the thoughts and beliefs, you might stop them from committing suicide.”
This publication understands that at the end of the training, the 15 participants will engage persons in the field, who may be suffering from anxiety disorder with or without suicidal thoughts.
Manger of the Guyana Sunrise Centre, Ms. Meenawattie from the Sunrise Centre added, “Every two months we would go through some of the things we would’ve learnt and try to identify our weaknesses and strengths, so that when he is back we can provide the statistics on how we would’ve worked and what were some of the progress.”
