Dear Sports Editor,
As we approach the Christmas season my mind reflects on the most prestige and well organized football tournament that ever graced these shores; “The Kashif & Shanghai yearend knockout tournament”. I remember once you hit November the talk around the country by the young, the old, male and female was the New Year’s Day finals. These guys knew how to organize a tournament and it’s the only football event that I’ve seen packed the stadium to capacity.
This tournament, which lasted over twenty years, was sabotaged by persons who had their personal agendas. The Banks Beer Cup, which lasted for three years, leaving the GFA with loads of expenses was the knockout punch for the K&S and many rejoiced. While K&S may have felt the punch do you know who suffered the most? GUYANA FOOTBALL.
Our fans have lost the passion for football. Go to our outfield tournaments (especially the Elite league) and you would find it wouldn’t take you long to count the fans. Ego can carry you so far but vision will take you a long way and that’s what I believe the K&S organization had. I remembered during the hosting of the K&S tournament there was a lot of noise by the GFA for fees to have their teams participate. Today the Petra Organization is hosting tournaments and no one is saying anything about fees but ours clubs are participating. Petra is controlling most of the football in Georgetown, from peewee to senior and no one is making any noise. How many clubs can say they received a donation from Petra? How many of our youths can say they have or had an opportunity to play overseas compliments of Petra Organization? I believe in being balance. What goes for one should go for all. I believe the Guyana football fraternity owes K&S Organization an apology for the way WE treat them after these men had dedicated over twenty years of their lives toward the development of football in this beautiful country.
For the love of this beautiful game.
Lomell Johnson.
