It was their third defeat in as many matches for Guyana when they opposed Curacao yesterday, day eight of the Concacaf Under-20 Championship USA 2018 at the IMG Academy, Bradenton Florida USA.
And while Guyana remains the only team in the group to register a point in the Group F encounters, Head Coach Wayne Dover acknowledged that it was the best performance his charges have pieced together to date.
”This is really the spirited effort we were looking forward to in the matches so far. We saw a better approach to the game, a bit more fight and the effort was commendable and I think we should have gotten something from the game.”
Commenting on the defending of the team which has allowed in 11 goals whist scoring 5, Dover said there is so much they could have done during the six weeks of preparation; his technical team tried to make the defensive organization as simple and precise as possible for the players.
”But at this level, the simple mistakes is what you would be punished for and every time we have made elementary mistakes we have been on the receiving end. So this comes down to individual management of the ability to play the ball and getting into the right position to play the ball.”
Dover stated that the approach for their final match tomorrow would be a positive one as they aim to end the tournament on a high.
”We’ve scored some goals and conceded a lot but we want to at least end this tournament with a win so we’ll give everything in the last game to see how best we get that win. We will try to see how best we can correct the awareness of the players in the next training session and hope that they can be disciplined defensively and we can score some goals so we can come out with three points.”
