The fleet of vehicles donated by the People’s Republic of China last year to B’ Division was yesterday subjected to an inspection by the officer in charge of traffic in the Division. The ten Foton Tunland double-cab 4 by 4, six motorcycles and two ATV’s were washed, cleaned and put on display for the inspection.
Commander of the Division, Paul Langevine, said that yesterday marked one year since the vehicles were donated and with that they thought it best to carry out the inspection to ensure that the vehicles are in “tip top shape”.
Traffic Officer for the Division, Timothy Williams, explained that a total of 10 pickups were allocated to the division with two that were on duty at the time of the inspection.
He stated, “For us to maintain the standard of these vehicles, every week they are inspected at the various sub-divisions and at the end of the month all of these vehicles are required to come to headquarters where we would conduct the general inspection so that whatever defects are identified can be remedied almost immediately”.
He added that based on the inspection, the vehicles and motorcycles were “fairly okay and they are working well”. Williams assured that the vehicles will continue to be maintained and kept up to standard.
The Commander told the media that since the vehicles were handed over to the division they have assisted tremendously with crime fighting.
“I have only been here for a few weeks but since I am here most of the stations are in possession of vehicles and they are able to traverse the areas more comfortably. But we will never have enough vehicles. The more vehicles you get will cover the areas more”.
December last year one of the vehicles that were donated to the division, was driven by a police rank, when it collided with a car along the Canje Public Road. It was just a day after it was donated by the Chinese.
The vehicle was repaired shortly after and the rank was charged departmentally for the damage caused.
