L/C’tyne, East Coast & East Bank win in final round
At 17, National U-18 Tennis Champion Afrucia Gentle has played a bit of Tapeball cricket but her outstanding batting in the GCB T20 female U-17 Cricket tournament is like a breath of fresh air at a time when more could be done to develop female cricket in Guyana.
The powerfully built right-handed batter who bowls left-arm spin, followed up scores of 55 not out, 89, 109 not out and 13 with an explosive 56 with eight fours and a six and added 97 with National U-15 footballer Shamaya Daniels who made 11 but could not get their team over the line at Wales yesterday.
West Demerara won by one run as East Bank could only reach 139-7 off 20 overs replying the home team’s 140-6 in 20 overs in one of the most exciting games in the tournament.
Jamaica Simon with an unbeaten 29 added 51 for the first wicket with Devika Boodenall (4) as West Demerara opted to bat on a slow track and heavy outfield before Gentle showed her ability with the ball and removed Boodenall, Varuni Pitamber (1) and Mellisa Carroll (9) to finish with 3-23 and move to 10 wickets in the tournament.
When East Bank began their reply, Delaney Seecharran was caught and bowled by the tournament’s leading wicket-taker Avima Buckan for a duck to take her tally to 15 scalps at 11-2.
Gentle then tore into the bowling with utter disdain and plundered Rebecca Renné for consecutive fours and a six in an over which cost 18 runs before blasting Pitamber for
back-to-back fours in an over which cost 13.
Daniels joined Gentle who soon reached her fifth score of fifty (one was converted into three-figures) when she hit Pitamber back over her head for four and celebrated the land mark with a brutal boundary past mid-wicket off the next ball.
But the pugnacious Gentle, who was anything but gentle on the bowlers yesterday, was well taken on the deep mid wicket boundary by Simon at 108-3.
And with their one Girl Army gone, East Bank fought gamely but needing one run to push West Demerara to a second tie, the visitors could not score off the last ball sparking excited celebration by the home team as if they had won the tournament. Simon had 3-23.
At Enterprise, Lower Corentyne beat Georgetown by 156 runs after Lower Corentyne scored 176- 4 in 20 overs. Shana Simon top scored with 32, while Niveena Ramnauth supported with 25. Bowling for Georgetown, Emalissa Whyte picked up 3-35.
Georgetown crumbled for 20-8 in 7 overs as Ramnauth ripped through the batting line up with 5-8, while Anisa Samaroo supported with 3-11.
In the second game at Enterprise, East Coast scored 163-3 in their 20 overs with MVP Shemika Edwards stroking an unbeaten 51, while Sarah Amin (14) was also not out as Britney Mc Ally and Shenea Leitch picked up two a wicket each.
Upper Corentyne in response struggled to 101 for 8 in 20 overs with Shaina Fraser top scoring with 11. National U-19 player Sarah Amin grabbed 2-14. (Sean Devers)
