Watched by a raucous crowd in sultry conditions at Wales yesterday, Essequibo, once a pun at time the Cinderella in Guyana’s cricket, added the inaugural GCB female U-17 T20 Franchise title to their Men’s Three-Day and 50-overs Franchise title with a 19-run win against West Berbice in their final round match.
Essequibo lost their second game against West Demerara in the super over after the thrilling contest ended in the first ever Tie. They had received a walk over in the opening round when East Bank was a no show.
With six victories, the same as Lower Corentyne, Essequibo took the title because they beat the Berbicians in their Head-to-Head match-up.
The final round commenced with Lower Corentyne who crushed Georgetown by 156 runs at Enterprise yesterday, hoping that West Berbice could pull off an upset win against the lasses from Guyana’s largest County.
But that was not to be as Essequibo reached 106-4 off 15 overs in a game reduced by five overs due to a late start. Annalisa D’Aguiar top scored with an unbeaten 19 with a single boundary on a slow track and sluggish outfield.
Navica Narine (10) and Lisa Charles (11) were the only other batters to reach double figures on the large ground in West Bank Demerara.
But D’Aguiar and Lalitha Patterson (8) rallied their team with what proved to be a winning total with an unfinished 50-run fifth wicket stand.
Mariam Telford (3-19) was the best bowler for West Berbice who, despite being helped by 53 wides, were restricted to 87-7 when their overs expired.
Tiea Issacs (21) and Tiemacia Soloman (11) were the only Region 5 batters to get to double figures. Divine Ross (3-19) and D’Aguiar (2-14) bowled their team to another title.
Head Coach Ryan Hercules said the tournament was a good starting point for the girls and praised them for their good showing in this tournament.
“This is a good group of girls with talent who now needs to be held together and with proper Coaching with some of them could even vie for selection on their County’s U-17 team,” Hercules said.
“When we get back to Essequibo we hope to set up a programme for them with the assistance of the Essequibo Board. Forbes Daniels conducts a programme and we hope to have these girls play among the senior girls and I am sure if enough emphasis is placed on Skill sets and knowledge of cricket and maybe one of them can get into the Guyana U-17 team.
