Andy Persaud and Randy Smith, the two men who allegedly robbed and stabbed Owen Marks in the face with an ice pick last Sunday evening on the Berbice Car Park, were yesterday charged.
Marks is an Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) resident.
The men appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to the charge which alleged that on November 4, 2018 at Hinck Street being armed with an ice pick, robbed Owen Marks of one Samsung cell phone valued at $70,000.
Both men pleaded not guilty.
According to police reports the incident took place at the Berbice car park around 22:45hrs. The alleged robbers were pursued and apprehended by public spirited individuals. They were promptly handed over to the police by personnel of a private security service who arrived on the scene.
The wounded man’s cell phone was not recovered. It was noted that the 32-year-old victim was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and was sent away.
In their defence, Persaud and Smith claimed that the issue is nothing of the sort as they were just liming on the park at the said time. “One set of people come and hold we saying we thief this man phone. They start beat we up and suh, even the security”, said Smith. They further went on to say that the item was not found on either of them but yet they were arrested.
Persaud informed the court that he is 23 years old, does masonry by trade and he resides at 19 Alberttown. Smith on the other hand informed the court that he is 19 and a labourer by occupation. He said that he resides at ‘C’ Hadfield Street.
Police Prosecution objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and that the men had similar matters in the court. He added that if they were granted bail they may not return to court.
Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore refused bail and instructed the men to return to court on November 28.
