Despite having to overcome the challenge of an injured ankle, Avinash Persaud showed his prowess on the golf course once again as he won the male overall category at the Guyana Open tournament which concluded on Sunday at the Lusignan Golf Course, East Coast Demerara.
In what was deemed as the biggest tournament ever on local shores, Persaud withstood keen competition from rivals Richard Haniff and Kevin Dinanauth, and in addition to winning the Best Gross he created history by returning a gross of 1 under par for the 1st day of the championship.
After trailing behind two other former Guyana Open champions, Dr. Joaan Deo who recently won the Suriname Open and Shanella Webster with whom she was tied for the best gross, Sukhram got the edge for the female title on day two. Of note among the four local females (out of 9 females who participated) was rookie Eureka Giddings, who played commendably to finish with a Net total of 176, having begun golfing only a few months ago.
Other remarkable performances came from Richard Haniff, Troy Cadogan and Esau Shamshudin. Richard Haniff turned a history making Guyana Open total Net score of 129, and was only three strokes behind winner Avinash for the Gross total. Troy Cadogan produced a exceptional 20 stroke improvement on the second day’s play, to not only tie with John Somwar, but also to edge him out at first place because of his better score on day two. Esau Shamshudin’s second day Net score of 138 was exceptional for the senior’s group, in fact placing him on a tie with Christine Sukhram and Mohanlall Dinanauth at 6th Best Net score out of the field of 89 golfers.
Max Persaud won the best gross for the 10-18 flight with 168, while Patanjalee Persaud won the net with 136.
Prizes were also awarded for Nearest to the Pin (NTP) and Longest Drive (LD) for each day. These were won by: Richard Haniff – NTP Day 1; Vick Ramnarine – LD Day 1; Avinda Kishore – NTP Day 2; and Jalen Raman – LD Day 2.
The tables below show the relevant final top scores in each Flight. The Guyana Open Male and Female champions are determined by their overall Gross Score, (the lowest score wins), hence though they may not win the Net score, the Gross is considered the better measure of the best golfer. Best Net scores in each Flight are necessarily rewarded since the Net Score is very significant in amateur golfing.
