An unbeaten 40 which was decorated with five fours from MVP Lilitha Patterson who shared in a 91-run fifth wicket stand with Marcia Anthony, who finished on 18 not out, led Essequibo to their fourth consecutive win in the GCB T20 Female U-17 cricket franchise yesterday when they beat Georgetown by 121 runs at the DCC ground in the first match of a double header.
The pair joined forces when Emalia Whyte bowled Davina Ross (4) at 89-4 but was the last success of the City side as the pair steered their team to 180-4 with Navika Narine chipping in with 13.
Whyte took 3-14 for GT who crashed to 59 all out in 15 overs with nobody reaching double figures.
Keira Hernandes and Whyte top scored with three before they were both removed by Ross who took 3-7 and when Neha Singh, one of the more elegant batters in the tournament, was run out for two at 49-4, Lisa Charles (2-3) and Onika Stoley (3-2) combined to dismantle the home team’s batting line-up in cloudy conditions.
In the afternoon game at DCC, Lower Corentyne Coached by West Indies Women’s player Tremayne Smartt, got past East Bank Coached by fellow Berbician Micheal ‘Hiles’ Franco, by seven wickets in hot conditions.
East Bank batted first and the tournament’s leading run scorer Afruica Gentle (13) and Dalancy Seecharran (7) give their team a solid 47 run foundation before they were restricted to 100-4 when their 20 overs expired. Ashmini Munisar (2-3) and Lafano Gilgeous (1-10) got the wickets to fall to bowlers.
Gentle, with scores of 55 not out, 89 and 109 not out in her previous innings was bowled by Gilgeous after hitting three boundaries in her 13.
The demise of Gentle, the only centurion in the tournament, triggered a collapse as only Seecharran (7) who was bowled by Munisar and Shenay Daniels (4) reached double figures.
The Berbicians, who has won only one of their five matches, reached 101-3 as MVP Munisar who was run out for 21 and Gilgeous, unbeaten on 21 shared in 41-run stand after coming together with the Region six team on 35-2. Hemwattie Mohabiar had 2-24.
At Enterprise, West Demerara beat Upper Corentyne by 44 runs after scoring 97-7 in 15 overs. Opener Jamaica Simon top scored with nine, while Britney Mc Ally, Sheridan Nelson and Alaneh Williams had two wickets each.
Upper Corentyne were restricted to 53-6 from their 15 overs with Sheridan Nelson (9) and Britney Mc Ally (7*) being the main scorers. Varunie Pitamber had 2-12.
In the second match at Enterprise, East Coast made 158 -4 in 20 overs with Shemika Edwards top scoring with 32. Renata Liverpool captured 2-25. No scores were available for the West Berbice in reply.
The action continues on tomorrow when Essequibo take on West Berbice and East Bank will face West Demerara at Wales, while Lower Corentyne oppose Georgetown and East Coast play Upper Corentyne at Enterprise. (Sean Devers)
