After spending three weeks on remand, on a murder charge, Tony George, a Rural Constable, yesterday walked out the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts a free man, following the withdrawal of the charge.
Tony George, 28, of Lot 75 Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, was accused of fatally stabbing a teenager who attended a wedding house celebration, last July.
It is alleged that on July 9, last, at Soesdyke, Public Road, East Bank Demerara, George murdered Ricardo Singh.
Yesterday when the matter was called in the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, George’s lawyer Dexter Todd, argued that the charge was bad in law and that there was no evidence upon which a charge against the accused could have been based.
The lawyer added that the law instituted a charge that should be withdrawn.
Prosecutor Richard Harris after listening to the defence attorney asked the court for time to seek further advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The DPP subsequently conceded with the defence council that the accused Tony George was wrongly charged with murder.
Hence Prosecutor Richard instructed Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to withdraw the charge against George.
According to information on the day in question, Ricardo Singh was at a wedding house celebration with some friends when an altercation ensued between him and other persons.
George arrested the teen and placed him in the tray of a police vehicle and proceeded to take him to the station.
The court heard that while proceeding to the station, George told the driver to stop the vehicle and he came out and ordered the teen to exit the vehicle.
It was further reported that the Constable told the driver to go at the station and return with more officers.
The court heard the driver subsequently returned to the Soesdyke Public Road with a party of officers and they saw Singh lying motionless on the ground with what appeared to be several stab wounds to his stomach.
The teen was then picked up and rushed to Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
It was also reported that eyewitnesses at the scene saw George using excessive force on Singh after he resisted arrest.
