Cleveland Forde continued his stellar form in the three-leg, South American 10K road race when he finished ahead of his rival Winston Missigher by two seconds to cross the finish line first at the National Park yesterday afternoon during a one to five finish for the Guyanese.
Forde ran a time of 34 minutes 07 seconds for the top prize of US$1000, while Missigher finished in 34 minutes 09 seconds, and Cleveland Thomas was third in 34 minutes 18 seconds, in the very closely competed race. Jonathan Fagundes was fourth, while Rickie Williams was fifth.
Devaughn ‘Scooby’ Barrington who was leading the race at the 5k mark couldn’t keep up with the pace and fell off completely from the podium.
In the first leg which was ran in Suriname the previous weekend, it was a similar one-two-three finish for the Guyanese men with Forde edging Missigher by one second for the win with Cleveland Thomas coming in third as was the case yesterday.
On the distaff end during the second leg which was competed under overcast conditions along the route which began at the GTT Earth’s Station on Carifesta Avenue and proceed towards the University of Guyana (UG) road on the Rupert Craig Highway and returning for the finish in the National Park, Kenisha Pascal of Grenada took the top spot. The Islander was followed by Guyana’s Shema Tyrell in second, Kezra Murray in third and Alliyah Moore in fourth.
Daniel Harvey of Running Braves athletics club won the junior males category, while Leyanna Charles of GDF won the Junior female category.
In addition to the top prize, the second place finishers in both the male and female Open categories pocketed US$600, third US$400, fourth US$300, while the top juniors pocketed grants/vouchers valued at US$100, US$75, US$50, US$25 from first to fourth respectively.
The third and final leg of the Region’s most prolific annual 10k series will be staged Sunday in Panama.
