According to reports, the increase included drainage and irrigation fees, from $2,500 to $8,000; land rent for rice farmers from $1,000 to $7,000; rent for cattle pastures from $487 to $2,500; and fees for other pastures from $200 to $1,400. This increase would have seen some of the fees increasing by as much as 600 percent.
However, in a recent Parliamentary sitting, the question of farmers being in default was raised. It was subsequently revealed that out of 2346 farmers, more than 1342 farmers are delinquent in the payment of their charges.
The question was posed by M.P Dharamkumar Seeraj and answered by the Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder who told the National Assembly that the “Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary / Agricultural-Development-Authority (MMA/ADA is making all efforts to collect current as well as arrear charges.”
