The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, has ordered that an inquest be conducted into the death of accident victim Donikel Campbelle.
The 28-year-old of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara died on February 18, after he was allegedly hit by a speeding motorcar on the Vreed-en-Hoop public road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), motorcar PRR 5279 was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of the public road when Campbelle reportedly dashed across, and ended up in the path of the vehicle. Due to the impact, Campbelle fell onto the road and sustained injuries about his body.
The injured man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, while a breathalyzer test revealed that there was no alcohol in his system. No one has been criminally charged for Campbelle’s death.
However, in a notice published in a daily newspaper last week by the Supreme Court of Judicature, 11 witnesses are required to attend the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court to give evidence in the inquest.
The witnesses are Police Constable A. Bourne, Police Constable N. Hardeo, Police Corporal S. Raghubir, Police Corporal D. Williams, Detective Constable K. DeSouza, Patsy Scipio, Joan Campbelle, Harold Campbelle, Delon Dunbar, Deon Greene and Chaitram Sookram.
The inquest proceedings according to the notice will commence on Tuesday. An inquest is an official process to discover the cause of someone’s death.
