Some of the participants who took part in the Agri Business Development capacity building and training session
The Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), in collaboration with the Regional Administration office of Lethem, and with support from the Ministry of Business, recently held an Agri., Business Development capacity building and training session in Lethem, Region Nine.
This activity was aimed at supporting the agro-processors who participated in the Regional Agriculture Commercial Exhibition (RACE).
Over 17 agro-processors benefited from this training. Participants were from the sub-districts South Pakaraimas, Central Rupununi, Deep South Rupununi and South Central Rupununi districts.
According to Jo-Lee Walton, Marketing Extension Officer at GMC, the training helped to prepare the agro-processors to improve their packaging and labelling, as well as building capacity in marketing and product development.
In an interview with this publication, Walton, who conducted the trainings, stated that “understanding the fundamentals of marketing and product development, as well as knowing the requirements for packaging and labelling are all important to the improvement and success of these small businesses.”
In addition to the training, the Guyana Marketing Corporation purchased and donated four different sizes of bottles with sealed caps for bottling of products such as cassareep, sorrel wine, ground pepper, pepper sauce and honey.
Staff members from GMC’s Marketing Department also designed and printed labels complete with nutritional facts, for the Shulinab Women’s Group- Natural Organic Products, J & W Natural Products, Karasabai and the Cooperative Society Quarrie Agriculture Products Ltd.
“The agro-processors of Region nine battle with the limitation of not having access to service providers, particularly label designers and packaging material suppliers. Therefore, for the purpose of this exercise, we saw the importance of assisting the groups by providing completed labels and bottles with sealed caps. As such, these groups were market-ready for the RACE participation.”
