The weather has changed somewhat over the last twelve hours in Mabaruma and organizers for the region one inter-zone athletics championship took advantage and pushed forward with the Javelin and Discuss events on Wednesday at the Recreational Ground.
The athletes were eager to return to the field after joining the regional agriculture commercial exposition earlier which Minister of Indigenous peoples affairs, Sydney Allicock and Director of Sports Mr. Christopher Jones attended.
In the Javelin event, Joey Ghanie (23.96m) of Mabaruma and Tanya Chappelle (13.15m) of Moruca were the Under 12 champions while Samuel Ramitt (29.63m) and Areefa Williams (19.42m) of Mabaruma grabbed podium spots. The Under 16 events champions were Tishon Simon (33.80m) of Mabaruma and Aliana Charles (19.33m) of Moruca while emerging stars Linford Marques (37.70m) and Maywattie Abrams (20.50m) of Moruca dominated the under 18 age category. Shane Rouse with a best of 40.45m was unmatched as he claimed championship honors.
Over at the Discus court, Morucans Darius Williams (18.77) and Tanya Chappelle 14.78 dominated the under 12 age group, while Mabaruma athletes were outstanding in the Under 14, 16 and 18 events with Alex Mariano(23.66), Areefa Williams 19.42, Kellon Daniels 20.88, Laura Dias 20.60 , Henry King 28.72 and Teneeza Ramitt 21.63 winning the male and female categories respectively.
Morucans Shemuel Bloomhart (20.90) and Rowena Matthias 15.80 closed off the day’s proceedings. The competition continues today.
