Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) in its continuing drive to promote cricket at all levels in the Ancient County and of Thursday last, launched an Under-13 Inter-Club Cricket Tournament. The Tournament would be the fifth junior cricket tournament to be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board in 2018, following in the footsteps of the Mike’s Pharmacy Under-15, Ramnaresh Sarwan Under-17, New York Business Group Under-19 and Elizabeth Styles Under-21 Tournaments.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster stated that on his election to the post on the 18th February, 2018, he committed his administration to organising cricket at all levels and to return the passion for the game in every village. This promise has been fulfilled in less than eight months as the Berbice Cricket Board has raised over $8M in cash and kind after taking over an account with just $42,000.
The Board is also on the way to successfully completing over twenty cricket tournaments at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Female, Second and First Division, Double Wicket levels. After being declared dead earlier this year, Foster stated Berbice Cricket is on the move again with the game being played at every level and in every village/township across the length of the county.
The Da Silva Motor Spares/BCB Under-13 Tournament would involve eight teams divided into two zones. Zone A consists of Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club, Achievers Cricket Club, Tucber Park Cricket club and Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club, while Zone B would have No. 19 Kendall’s Union Cricket Club, Albion Community Centre Cricket Club, Rose Hall Town Poonai’s Pharmacy and Port Mourant Cricket Club. The top two teams for each zone would advance to the Semifinals. Foster also disclosed that the first innings shall be restricted to 25-Overs but the second innings in the one day tournament shall be unrestricted. The tournament shall be opened to players born on or after the 1st September, 2005.
Foster expressed confidence that the tournament would be a huge success and that it would serve as a nursery for the county’s Under-15 Tournament. The Berbice Cricket Board, he proudly stated is unmatched across Guyana, in terms of organising tournaments for its members. He expressed gratitude to General Manager of the Da Silva Motor Spares for investing in Berbice Cricket and expressed confidence that the relationship would be a long term one.
Da Silva praised the outstanding work of the Berbice Cricket Board and stated that he was following the progress of Berbice Cricket via the media. The Businessman, who is an ardent cricket fan, also committed himself to establishing a working relationship with the Board as it strives to develop every potential talent. The Berbice Cricket Board would like to express thanks to its former President Anil Beharry and Ricky ‘4R’ Deonarine for the roles they played in obtaining the sponsorship.
The Tournament would bowl off tomorrow with four matches:
