In an effort to return to its former glory, the once power house of cricket in Guyana, Young Warriors Cricket Club recently received top quality coloured clothing from Ravi Etwaroo of Cricket Zone, Bronx, USA. The club was rapidly declining when an appeal was made for assistance on social media and without hesitation, Etwaroo responded.
The uniforms were presented by Alfred Madray on behalf of the sponsor. He said that the owner Cricket Zone USA continues to give back to his country of birth and is always generous. He continues to support young and talented cricketers in and out of the USA and takes pleasure in doing so.
Receiving the uniforms on behalf of the Club was their First Division Vice Captain, Suresh Dhanai who was high in praise for the sponsor. He said that when the club should have pushed on after producing their first test cricketer, the opposite happened and he was so pleased when some very responsible citizens in the East Canje area took up the challenge to assist. He said that work was recently done on the outfield, minor repairs to the main pavilion, plumbing and other maintenance that was left undone. He added that the club will raise funds to purchase covers that were stolen and a lawn mower.
Dhanai said that the club has a short but rich history producing several West Indies Under 19 cricketers including Gajanand Singh, Richard Ramdeen and the first ever winning Under 19 World Cup Cricket Captain for the West Indies, Shimron Hetmyer, who has now graduated to the highest level. He said that Hetmyer is only the second player from the East Canje area that played Test Cricket for the West Indies after Leonard Baichan. He also mentioned the names of former national senior skipper Damodar Daesrath, Kwesi Maltay, Balram Samaroo, Paul Wintz, Darrel Narine, Loaknauth Ramsuchit, Alex Algoo, Farouk Hussain, Gevon Schultz, Imran Jaffarally and Hemnarine Chattergoon among others that came through the club structure. He also mentioned that the club has won all of their matches since its resuscitation.
In closing, he once again thanked Ravi Etwaroo of Cricket Zone USA and urged cricketers to support the Cricket Store so that he can continue to give back to his country of birth.
