Veteran Golfer Clifford Reis, in great form, executed some pin-point accuracy plays to emerge champion in the largely attended Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) inaugural annual tournament, out of a field of some 45 golfers – one of the largest one-day turnouts for the year – on Saturday last.
In addition, former twice times Guyana Open Champion, Mohanlall Dinanauth, put up a great performance to deliver the Best Gross score for the day, as golfers prepare for the challenge of next weekend’s international Guyana Open 2018 Golf Tournament, set for Saturday and Sunday, November 3 & 4.
Guyana Shore Base Inc. of 45 Water Street, Georgetown, Guyana, is a majority Guyanese-owned joint venture made up of Muneshwers Ltd., Pacific Rim Constructors, TotalTec Oilfield Services and LED Offshore. It was awarded a contract to provide shore base services to ExxonMobil offshore operations, and it will be responsible for the operation of a shore base facility at Muneshwers Limited Houston port. The 28-acre warehousing and logistics base is part of Exxon’s Liza Field project, and will provide port facilities, accommodations on site, fuel bunkering, bulk cementing and mud plants.
Played under the 3-Flights Medal Play system, in which players were grouped by handicaps 0-9 for ‘A’ Flight; 10-18 for ‘B’ Flight and 19-28 for ‘C’ Flight, and the lowest score received the win, the Tournament was a refreshing and exciting challenge to all as they jostled for top places. Prizes were awarded for 1st and 2nd Best Net scores in each Flight; Nearest to The Pin; the overall Best Gross; and the overall Best Net. The overall Best Net winner was the Tournament Champion.
In the ‘C’ Flight, winners were: 1st – Clifford Reis 64/25; 2nd Haresh Tewari 71/19. Close competition was offered from Eion Blue 73/28; Guillermo Escarraga 74/21 and Robert Hanoman 75/28.
In the ‘B’ flight, the winners were: 1st – Gavin Todd 65/18; 2nd Kalyan Tiwari 67/15. The 3rd place score was from Shanella Webster 67/16 – who tied with Kalyan for 67 – but Kalyan’s better ‘back 9’ edged him forward. Very keen contention came also from Fazil Haniff 68/15; Ayube Subhan 68/16 and Patanjalee Persaud 68/17.
In the ‘A’ Flight, winners were: 1st – Mohanlall Dinanauth 68/5: 2nd – Munaf Arjune 73/9. Other contenders were Jaipaul Suknanan 74/9 and Salim Rasheem 75/8.
The other prizes were won by Mohanlall Dinanauth – overall Best Gross; Haresh Tewari – Nearest The Pin; and Clifford Reis – the overall Best Net.
CEO of GYSBI, Mr Mark Edwards – himself an avid golfer – in congratulating the winners and addressing all present, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in golfing in Guyana and pledged that their tournament would be an annual one. Club President Aleem Hussain, in responding thanked Mr. Edwards on behalf of the Lusignan Golf Club and welcomed his sponsorship and involvement in the game, noting that Mr. Edwards has registered to play in the Guyana Open 2018 Tournament of next weekend. Mr. Hussain took the opportunity to outline Club plans for November to January. Immediately following the Guyana Open there will be tournaments sponsored by MaCorp, Banks DIH, and Microsoft among others, and this will be followed by the Mariott’s largest charity tournament for the region in January 2019.
