Defending champions General Services will defend their Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc Inter Department Basketball crown against surprise finalist Plant Operations on Saturday after they eliminated Mines and Plant Maintenance respectively last Saturday night in semifinal action at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
First to reach the final were Plant Operations who played well to knockout their opponents but a mere two points, 41-39, in what was a shock result for many.
In the first semifinal, Plant Operations looked to get an early run at their rivals and gained a surprise first quarter lead by a 8-4 score-line and that confidence came their way and by the end of the first half they were ahead 19-12.
Stunned were the Maintenance lads and they responded to go on a run that eventually yielded a 28-22 second half performance. But this proved in the end not enough to overhaul the first half deficit and they lost by a 41-39 score.
Architect of that upset was Quincy Dodson and a willing team that supported well.
Dodson led the victory march with 12 points as he was supported by Omisisi Williams with eight, while Myron Scott chipped in with six.
The Operations were led to their win through Dodson who had a top score of 12 points as Williams supported with eight, while Myron Scott added six in the win.
General Services began well cruising to an 18-11 first quarter lead with Jamar Bethune, Alfie Robertson and Terron Welch taking the game to their opponents. Bethune who attacked the basket was the early tormenter going inside.
As the offence continued to take the game to the inside, Mines found it difficult to keep things under control and when the first half ended it favoured the reigning champions by a 32-24 score.
The Mines did well in the second quarter and while trailing at the half way stage were in with a chance.
In the third quarter they went inside and played in close proximity to the basket where Dennis ‘Fishman’ Anderson was stationed. Anderson muscled his way in at times and did some penetration, and with some help from the hard working Marlon Pollydore, Mines were in with a chance.
But the two former Junior National players Anderson and Pollydore could not resist the challenge posed by the former National player Welch, as Bethune continued his offensive forays with Robertson and company supporting well.
In the end Mines found it difficult to mine in the area as the Services team spread the ball around before finishing strong to the hoop.
A close game up to five minutes on the game clock ended with a comfortable 64-49 victory for The Services side.
Robertson top scored with 18 points, while Bethune netted 17 and Welch added 10 for the winners.
Anderson and Pollydore each finished with 16 points as Akeem Primo got eight in a losing cause.
Mines will play Plant Maintenance for third place and General Services will face the challenge of Plant Operations in the BOSAI basketball championship game on Saturday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
