early Friday morning crash that saw a truck running off the East Bank Public Road and plowing into the fence of the National Stadium, Providence, left 45-year-old Kirk Peters of Sophia dead, while the driver received minor injuries.
When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, a green Model (M) Bedford truck, bearing registration plates GTT 2491 was, cabin first in the concrete drain just outside the Providence Stadium. Peters, the porter for the truck, was pinned in the cabin.
The driver was said to have been taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries received in the accident.
Police had already diverted traffic from the eastern carriageway and MACORP, a company that operates just a corner away from where the accident occurred, had a front end loader and an excavator trying to get the truck from the concrete drain where it was wedged.
There was the attempt to free the lifeless body of Peters from the cab. After some efforts, the staff of MACORP were able to get the truck that was laden with drums of diesel fuel, from the drain, unto the road. The staffers then used the heavy machinery to prise open the cabin to facilitate the removal of the body.
Peters’s shirtless body lay motionless in a sitting position, with his seatbelt still in place. The scene was one that caused many persons who were in close proximity to the accident to express their pity.
One witness told this publication that she was heading to Georgetown around 07:05 hours while the truck was heading up the East Bank in the direction of Timehri, when she heard a loud sound after which the truck veered off the road crashing into the concrete drain and fence of the Stadium.
The woman said a number of people ran to help, but there was little that could have been done for Peters who was calling out for help, but was pinned. Another first responder said he was telling the man to hold on, and got replies from Peters from time to time, but after about six minutes, Peters stopped responding. The witness said he then assumed Peters was dead.
Police in a statement said the 51-year-old driver of Albouys Street, Albouystown, was also the owner of the truck. He was given a breathalyzer test and was found to be negative for alcohol in his blood.
He was then taken into custody where he is assisting police with their investigations.
