A teenager of Lot 5 Yakusari North, Black Bush Polder who was placed before the courts and released on $150,000 bail at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court for the rape of a teacher from the said village in 2017 was yesterday found not guilty by a panel of mixed jury at the Berbice High Court.
Sunil Suedhar stood before Judge Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and a prosecution led by Mandal Moore while the accused was represented by Attorney-at-law Arud Gossai. He has previously pleaded not guilty to the offence. He walked out the court a free man with his relatives by his side.
Suedhar was accused of engaging in sexual penetration with the school teacher without her consent between November 2 and November 3, 2017. The teacher had told Kaieteur News in 2017 that it was just after midnight and she was fast asleep with her five-year-old son when she awoke to an individual gripping her at the neck.
She disclosed that the individual who is a known ‘junkie’ around the village demanded that she remove her clothing and engage in sexual activity with him.
“I had my phone light on the bed and I cut it off but then I felt a knife at my throat. I didn’t say anything to him; I just started to cry and then he gave me two slaps and then he took off my clothes and rape me.”
She had explained that the assault took place in the upper flat of their two-storied home. Her husband was not at home at the time of the assault since he was at work in the back dam.
She stated that after the intruder left she immediately contacted her husband. A report was filed shortly after at the Mibicuri Police Station.
