President David Granger was the guest of honour at a Prayer Breakfast held at the Watooka Complex on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Communities Valerie Adams- Yearwood and Minister of Social Protection Amna Ally.
Among those in attendance were Regional Leaders and other important stakeholders.
Pastors and other Religious Leaders across Linden and Region Ten took the opportunity to pray for the nation, the peaceful conducting of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) and the general socio/economic climate of the country, among other things.
Minister Adams-Yearwood called the event a “signal event” as it was the first of its kind to be held in Linden. She called the President a man “after God’s own heart!”
President Granger and Team later Wednesday afternoon, met residents at the Egbert Benjamin Hall, where the eight candidates to contest the upcoming LGE were also present. The highlight of the event, which was dubbed the first “open house meeting”, was the upcoming local Government Elections and how important it is, for residents to go out and vote on November 12.
Residents were reminded of the significance of LGE and were introduced to those persons chosen by the APNU to represent the various constituencies.
APNU Party Chairman, Derron Adams, in his brief address said that the APNU was the only party to hold Primaries in Linden and Region Ten and exhorted Lindeners to vote wisely.
President David Granger delivered the feature address.
Alluding to the former administration the President declared, “We cannot support a party that runs a country for twenty three years and refuse to call Local government Elections. This is the party that has created four towns in the last three years. The PPP was keeping Guyana undeveloped.”
The President, in extolling the benefits of LGE, alluded to Bartica and the development taking place there over the past three years.”Bartica has a beautiful waterfront. If you go to Bartica, you will see how it has been transformed.”
President Granger said that the APNU did in one year what the former Administration could not do in 22 years. He pointed out that training for Leadership starts at the Local Government Level..
The beauty of Local Government Elections, the Head of State said, “is that you know these people!”
Following the President’s address, residents were afforded the opportunity to highlight issues affecting them.
Some of the issues highlighted included the Christianburg Primary School which was closed since 2015. Subsequently students from the school were housed at the St Aidan’s Primary School.
One very vocal parent declared, “We really need to have the Christianburg School rebuilt. Is not everyday parents does have that $100 to pay transportation or the $3,500 and even $8,000 to pay taxi when the month come.”
The parent claimed that the Regional Administration is very much aware of the difficulties parents face in sending their children to school.
A teacher who is currently occupying a house in the teachers’ quarters on Blue Berry Hill, spoke of the atrocious state of the facilities and the fact that exorbitant sums are being deducted from Teachers Salaries each month, despite the fact that Regional Chairman Rennis Morian had mandated that no more monies should be deducted from the teachers’ salaries.
Several other issues were highlighted and the President, as well as Minister Valerie Adams-Yearwood and Regional Chairman Rennis Morian sought to address most of those.
The evening ended on a high note with 48 students, from the eight constituencies in Linden, being presented with Bicycles under the President’s five B’s initiative.
