Dear Editor,
I recently returned from a short vacation in the United States. I took the opportunity to interact with several relatives and friends, many of whom I have not seen for quite some time.
My observation is that overall, Guyanese in the United States are doing well. There are several challenges such as home ownership and rentals for apartments, which is relatively high especially for those at the bottom of the income ladder.
I get the distinct impression that Guyanese love and care for their country and would love to see the country move forward. One overriding concern is that of the future of democracy in the country. There is a fair measure of trepidation that future elections in Guyana may not be free and fair and that the country could revert to its undemocratic past.
The crime situation also looms large in the psyche of Guyanese, many of whom are hesitant to return home out of fear of being attacked by criminal elements.
Despite the above reservations, there is also some optimism that with the emerging oil and gas economy, living conditions in the country could improve.
