Dear Editor,
This letter is in response to Woolford’s letter entitled “Foreigners see Guyana as the dirtiest”. I have to disagree with the thesis of the letter as it’s blaming the impoverished communities for not having first world garbage facilities.
Furthermore, it’s not wholly up to the local’s responsibility for removing fridges and debris from the seawall, and as Guyana has a low GDP per capita of US$3,500 a year, the resources to clean up the seawall where debris could come from miles away is costly.
However the writer’s quote “Once this situation remains unchanged, I will write to international organizations such as the World Health Organization, Norway, and the ACB countries, just to name a few.”
This is a dangerous premise as many foreign countries are aware that the First world countries do not really have the interests of the Third world and poorer countries at heart.
Lately, the US government has been contemplating a military invasion of Venezuela, confabulating excuses such as how the Venezuelan government which has been sanctioned by USA, Canada and EU has been 100% responsible for the collapse of the country’s trade and economy. This is untrue as the sanctions created more harm than the alleged government policies themselves.
Therefore, the First world countries justify oppression of poorer countries by finding excuses. Therefore, overseas Guyanese should be very wary that penning complaints on sovereign poorer nations to the First world monoliths will help anyone but the 1st world countries.
Furthermore, in countries such as Canada, USA, United Kingdom, one cannot openly write letters to complain on certain issues. There are explicit festivities called “Pride month” where one can see the obscenest of acts by members of the LGBT community. They are also doing this in the nude, despite laws against public nudity and obscenity in several of these countries.
Christian Pastors who have the right to preach in the cities within law have been harassed and physically assaulted by supporters of the LGBT while police do nothing or find excuses to charge the Pastor for offending someone.
Therefore, it’s a contradiction that overseas Guyanese and foreigners would write letters to show a high moral ground and castigate Guyanese for the poverty situation, but the foreign countries like Canada, USA, UK and EU would not allow anyone to criticize certain 1st world issues like LGBT.
