A resident of West Ruimveldt who according to police had an unlicenced firearm in his possession was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the offence.
Thirty-two-year-old Paul Bishop, of 37 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, denied the charge which alleged that on October 9, last, at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, he had in his possession a .32 revolver when he was not a licenced firearm holder.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
Facts presented by the Prosecutor stated that on the day in question, members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were conducting a raid exercise in Freeman Street, when they saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
The court heard that a search was then conducted on the defendant and the unlicensed firearm was discovered in a black plastic bag.
The officers told the defendant about the offence committed, and Bishop allegedly said: ‘Sir I found the gun when I was digging sand in front my gate.’
He was taken to the East La Penitence Police Station and later charged.
Bishop when given a chance to address the court said, “Madam I am suffering from depression. I was digging a hole in front my gate and I found the gun. When the police arrested me I was on my way to carry the gun at the station for safe keeping.”
The Chief Magistrate after listening to the Prosecutor remanded the defendant to prison.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on October 17 for report.
