The National Dance Company of Guyana is set to introduce their 39th dance season production under the theme “Metamorphosis” this Sunday at the National Cultural Centre. The annual production, held to commemorate the formation of the company, will see dancers from the company’s junior, senior and associate categories, with dancers as young as 12 years-old.
Vivienne Daniel, Director and Chief Choreographer of NDC, stated that Dance Season 39’s theme aims to provoke thought and wonder in patrons. The production’s theme “Metamorphosis” in a simpler term, change, seeks to convey through theatrical and interpretive dance change in more aspects rather than just one. It speaks to change on every level; it speaks to the judgmental and assumptive nature of humankind. NDC’s production seeks to appeal to the imaginative senses of its audience.
With a diversified reach, the production will consist of an extensive range in genre, incorporating Reggae, Ballet, Classical music, Bollywood, and even Jazz. Encompassing Guyana’s marriage of cultures, the opening sequence of the production titled “The Purge” offers a visionary’s outlook of society’s modus operandi as well as its norms. NDC’s recent productions were done under a strictly led theme; however, “Dance Season” will incorporate a variety of subthemes, ranging from questions of identity to theatrical tales through dance.
The National Dance Company of Guyana was founded out of the need for students to have an institution of some sort to go to after they become accomplished. NDC has provided a place for students to study dance in theory and practical, with associate student dancers who are being trained to master the art of dance.
Tickets for the show “Metamorphosis” which will begin on Sunday and conclude on Monday, cost $1700.
