Chan, 42, who, according to him, is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery next year January, was arraigned before a City Court yesterday. Police contends that he devised a trick. Chan is not denying, claiming he had desperate reasons to do so. The unrepresented man pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on October 4, last, at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, he devised a trick claiming to be Doctor Mahendra Carpen, to collect a cheque of $100,000 from Frank Sanichara, a businessman Police Prosecutor, Quinn Harris, narrated the facts. According to the Prosecutor, on October 4, last, around 12:00 hrs, Chan called the victim’s cellular phone pretending to be doctor Carpen.
The court heard that Chan told the victim that he needed $100,000 to perform an open heart surgery. The Prosecutor added that the victim recognized the voice not to be that of Dr. Carpen.
Suspicious of the phone call, Sanchar telephoned the doctor who denied calling him. A barefaced Chan some time after, turned up at the victim’s business place to collect the cash.
But he got the surprise of his life when he was arrested by police. From the prosecution’s facts, he fully cooperated with the police as it was reported in court that he gave a caution statement.
The Magistrate after listening to the facts asked Chan if he had anything to say. The trickster said, “I was to attend clinic today but I’m here. I have to undergo an open heart surgery next January.”
Chan went on to tell the court that he was pronounced dead by doctors at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and was placed in a morgue.
The Magistrate after listening to both sides fined Chan $100,000. Failure to pay the fine will see him spending months in jail.
