A 33-year-old cocaine addict was yesterday sent to prison for 13 years after pleading guilty to an attempted murder charge, about three weeks ago.
The man, Quincy Henry, who was deported from Barbados, admitted that he stabbed a man to the neck, after the individual refused to give him $100.
According to the indictment, on September 20, 2015 at Bourda, Georgetown, Henry also known as “Fix it” unlawfully and maliciously wounded Troy Bacchus called “Fletcher”, with intent to murder him.
According to facts presented by Prosecutor Tiffini Lyken, on the day in question Bacchus was at Merriman Mall when someone asked him for $100. He gave the money and thereafter held his wallet. Upon seeing this, Henry also begged for $100, too, but was told by Bacchus that he does not have money.
Prosecutor Lyken related that Bacchus walked away, but was followed by Henry and they became involved in a scuffle during which Bacchus was stabbed to the neck.
The injured man, according to the prosecutor, fell to the ground but managed to get up. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by a public-spirited citizen. He was admitted.
A medical report presented to the court showed that the injuries the man received were potentially life threatening.
Probation Officer, Anand Sharma from the Ministry of Social Protection presented a probation report. Sharma revealed that Henry had migrated to Barbados to live with his mother, after living with his grandmother at Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
However, he was deported from the island after his sister reported his abusiveness to cocaine. Upon his return Henry did odd jobs in the Bourda Market to sustain himself. He admitted to the Probation Officer that he has an addiction to “crack” cocaine and he was charged previously with robbery, abusive language and larceny.
He was convicted for larceny and served three years in jail.
Vendors in the Bourda Market, the Probation Officer pointed out, described Henry as a “junkie”, “nuisance” and “bully.” However, during his address to the court, Henry who is hearing impaired and has a speech impediment refuted the prosecution’s facts.
The man said that it was Bacchus who had attacked him with a length of wood and a hammer.
He narrated that he and Bacchus were in a scuffle when Bacchus fired a lash at him with the wood. The drug addict said that he held onto the weapon and stabbed Bacchus to the neck with a knife he retrieved from his pocket.
Justice Reynolds before passing sentencing expressed that Henry was a waste of human resources. The judge said that he is a “victim of his own circumstances.” The judge said that he was very impressed with the manner in which Henry narrated his version of what transpired to the court.
The Judge commended Henry’s vocabulary, while pointing out that his usage of words is much better that many persons who had lengthy schooling.
The Judge expressed that it was unfortunate Henry could not afford a lawyer, since from his version of the story, he could have argued self defense.
“You clearly are sensible. You probably need counselling,” the Judge told Henry before he was escorted by prison officers to begin serving the sentence.
