The community of Den Amstel situated on the West Coast of Demerara is shaping up to host one of the biggest sporting events on the West Side later this month.
The event set to kick off on October 21 is the 9-a-side Hamilton Green Inter-Ward/ Village Cup which will be held to commemorate the 84th Birth Anniversary of the former Mayor of Georgetown.
According to Co-ordinator Lennox Arthur over $700,000 in prize monies, trophies and gifts will be awarded to the respective winners and outstanding performances in what is anticipated to provide riveting action for fans.
Arthur, who has been the centerpiece of the Mayor’s Cup for a number of years, said that thirty-two teams have been invited to participate in the tournament which will be run on a knockout basis with the final set to be played on November 11, at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground.
The winning team will walk away with $400,000 and a trophy compliments of the Ministry of Citizenship, while the runner-up will be awarded $200,000 and trophy through the goodwill of John Fernandes Ltd.
The third place finisher will receive $50,000 and the Techno Mills trophy.
All three top placed finishers will be given hampers.
Arthur further disclosed that special prizes will be given to Highest Goalscorer, who will walk away with a Lazy Boy Chair courtesy of A.H&L Kissoon and a Dinette Set compliment of China Trading.
The Most Valuable Player will be awarded a special prize from Techno Mills.
Meanwhile, the first three days of action will see eight matches played with the winners advancing to the next round.
On opening night, Kitty face Plaisance from 17:00hrs and this will be followed by the clash between Newtown Kitty and Grove at 17:30hrs, while West Side Masters tackle Mahaica at 18:00hrs.
The next game is between Central McKenzie and Mahaicony at 18:30hrs, before Alexander Village and Buxton collide from 19:00hrs.
Zeelugt then go up against Tucville from 19:30hrs and this will precede the encounter between Uitvlugt and Lilliendaal at 20:00hrs with host Den Amstel and Herstelling bringing the curtains down with their encounter at 20:30hrs.
Then on October 28 eight more matches are scheduled with Goed Fortuin versus Agricola from 17:00hrs; Sara Lodge vs. Sophia; Broad Street vs. Mocha; Timehri vs. Wales; Kuru Kururu vs. Jetty; Soesdyke vs. Crane; Lima Dam vs. Pouderoyen and Bagotville vs. Sparta Family.
All teams are being asked to be at the venue one (1) hour before their scheduled playing time.
