A Colombian, who pleaded with a City Magistrate to allow him to stay in Guyana so that he can seek medical attention for colon cancer, was yesterday jailed after pleading guilty to an illegal entry charge.
Aziel Sanchez, 48, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 30, 2018, at Lethem, he entered Guyana by crossing a land frontier and failed to present himself to an immigration officer.
Sanchez who spoke to the court through an interpreter stated that he is suffering from colon cancer and is in desperate need of medical attention hence the reason for him being in Guyana.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Simone Payne, stated that Sanchez came to Guyana illegally and was hiding out in a clump of bushes in the Lethem area.
The matter was reported, an investigation was carried out by the police and he was arrested and taken into custody.
The Magistrate sentenced Sanchez to three months imprisonment.
On completion of serving the time, he will be taken to the nearest port of exit and deported back to his homeland.
