The Young Warriors Cricket Club of East Canje, Berbice which was once one of the top cricket clubs in Berbice, has of recent times been going through a rough patch. A number of reasons have been put forward for its decline including infighting and other differences causing some members to leave. Residents, former administrators and members have taken note of the rapid decline of the club in a short period of time.
As such some members of the club and concerned residents have called on its former players and administrators to help revive the club. Among those who have been called upon to help in the revival process in former Berbice Cricket Board and Young Warriors President Anil Beharry and Former Guysuco Sports Officer and Welfare Officer Gladstone Hetmyer.
Among concerns is the fact that of recent the club has been unable to field a first division team in a number of BCB competitions and also missed out on a few junior tournaments.
The club’s infrastructure has also declined due to lack of maintenance.
The Club has only recently produced its first Test player in Shimron Hetmyer, who is the second cricketer from the Canje area, after Leonard Baichan, to play senior international cricket for the West Indies.
A number of other players would have played for West Indies Junior teams including Gajanand Singh and Richard Ramdeen, while others like Seon Hetmyer would have represent Guyana and Berbice at various levels.
An Interim Committee headed by Beharry has been put in place to oversee the management of the club in an effort to return it to its former glory. Other members include Amir Khan – Secretary, Suresh Sripal – Treasurer, Roshan Sattaur, Vishal Mohabir, Seon Hetmyer, Suresh Dhanai and Linden Austin who will head venue preparation. Kwasi Maltay is coach, while Gladstone Hetmyer and Satanand Mohabir shares the work of Manager.
The club once hosts the popular Mash Cup Cricket tournament and has promised a return of the tournament in 2019. They are seeking assistance in whatever way possible.
