Long ago, I read in a British newspaper where one of the world’s leading rock singers said that no matter how wild and carefree you live, once a child comes, it changes your life forever. Every parent, I guess, has that feeling.
The crazy things I did without caring about how they went down changed after my daughter was born. A parent has to be very sensitive about the things they do because their children are watching.
One wonders what goes through the head of public figures when they do hypocritical things. Don’t they know their families will recognize their hypocrisy and opportunism? Two organizations in this country, I have no respect for – the Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the Bar Association. Both are important entities whose voices of moral righteousness should influence people in general and the young in particular. But they don’t
I lived under the entire period of the tenure of both Presidents Jagdeo and Ramotar. Jagdeo’s rule was authoritarian, crass, philistine and destructive. No leader before Jagdeo in the history of the British West Indies faced the damning accusations of a wife of spousal abuse as Jagdeo did.
Mr. Jagdeo took precious foreign exchange and built a hotel, an absolute waste of state funds. There was not one word of criticism from the PSC. The PSC was in a coma during the hegemony of the PPP 1999-2015.
A change of government occurred and in a process that defies science, the PSC was reborn. It says things against the post 2015 administration whose record is a billion times cleaner than the Jagdeo regime. How do you explain these scientific acrobatics (which the PSC will perform at Circo Suarez this evening)? Why was the PSC silent before 2015?
You take your pick of answers. I would say ethnic solidarity stood out egregiously. What about image and credibility? Aren’t family members asking their big bosses; ‘but why you were silent when Jagdeo was doing all these unpatriotic things?”
An incident occurred between a traffic cop and a lawyer. It is a story that most Guyanese people couldn’t be bothered with because it does not affect their lives as if it was a judge or a minister who makes vital decisions on life in Guyana. A lawyer cussing up a policeman on the roadside – so what is national in news about that? Let them settle their dispute either by the lawyer suing the police or the police arresting him.
Did that incident necessitate a press release from the Bar Association? The answer is no. But if the answer is yes then that person who is saying yes will be pressed to explain why.
The Bar Association is either ignorant of what goes on in this country or playing ignorant or is morbidly hypocritical in that it emphasizes the mundane, the banal or the inconsequential over the essential, the sensitive, the crucial. In academia, lawyers are not considered intellectuals except those engaged in scholarly research in academic institutions.
A majority of them in Guyana lack even a cursory familiarity with epistemology, a subject they need to excel in because epistemology is about the derivative and meaning of the words which form the basis of knowledge. Many lawyers get away with a lot of nonsense in cross examinations in magistrate courts in this country because the witnesses are intimidated. Many of the police prosecutors are extremely poor in training and many of the magistrates know less than the lawyers who appear in front of them.
So we have the Bar Association which promptly composed a press release on the Ryan “Effing” Crawford debacle where he is accused of cussing down a traffic rank. Why a press release on that incident when major lacerations of the law take place so frequently? In fact one can question if the rule of law is functionally stable in Guyana.
A magistrate violates the law of trafficking in person, the government condemns her illegal decision and the Bar Association was in Timbuktu when it happened.
The DPP frees two underage sisters charged for conspiring to murder their father. Canadian authorities requested the dropping of the charges and took the children back to Canada where they are free as the birds. The Bar Association was in Timbuktu when that happened.
One of my favourite crooners, Frenchman, Charles Aznavour, died two days ago. I had planned to spend tonight listening to his songs with my wife but I am definitely going to Circo Suarez to see the Bar Association perform. My God! It will be an ugly sight! But wild horses cannot drag me away from Circo Suarez tonight.
