A 31-year old vendor who operates a stall in Stabroek Market was yesterday remanded to prison for robbing a man of over one million worth in jewellery.
Leonard Farley of Lot ‘03’ Grove, Public Road, East Bank Demerara was yesterday remanded to prison for robbery under arms.
It is alleged that the defendant on September, 29, at the Black and White Bridge, Tucville, East La Penitence, while armed with a knife, robbed Wayne Bratt of four gold chains, eight gold rings, and one gold band all to the value of $1,469,000.
Farley pleaded not to the charge that was read to him by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law George Thomas who made an application for reasonable bail.
Farley’s attorney told the court that his client had no other conviction or pending matters and that his client had provided the police officers with an alibi that removed him from the scene of the incident, thus he was released on station bail.
The attorney also told the court that his client had to report to the station and that he showed up every day. There is no reason he would not do the same if he is placed on bail, Thomas said.
Police Prosecutor, Shallon Daniels, told the court that on the day in question, the victim was proceeding home when he was confronted by the defendant, who relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge.
The prosecutor had no objection to bail, but requested that it be substantial and that conditions be attached based on the seriousness of the offense.
Nevertheless, the magistrate refused bail and the client was remanded until October 10.
