Calypsonian Randolph Kendall, better known as “Sweet Kendingo”, treated residents of Archer’s Home for the Elderly, on Thursday to musical renditions. In keeping with the “Month of the Elderly”, this soca monarch, calypsonian and road march winner has been providing joy for many senior citizens.
The “Month of the Elderly” has arrived just after the allocation of funds in the 2019 budget for the Ministry of Public Health’s implementation of an elderly health programme.
Kendall, a local musician, known for his skills through his many musical feats over the years has decided to give back to a community that is often neglected. Kendall who hails from Corentyne, Berbice, has displayed an immeasurable amount of commitment to the nation’s elderly.
The musician would travel across the country to host concerts at the various homes. Some of his famous stops include the Archer’s Home for the Elderly, Nazareth Home, Good Samaritan Home in Berbice, Mother Theresa Sisters’ Home for Elderly Men, Dharm Shala; Indigent Home; Gentle’s Home; St. Vincent de Paul and Ivy Hall, in Georgetown.
Kendall sees his music as a way in which aged individuals can reminisce and reflect on experiences of a time long gone.
When asked about his reason for spreading this musical joy, Kendall explained that he decided one October, many years ago, to use his voice and his instrument to make a few residents a bit happier.
Consequently, he was told that his visit was perfectly timed with the “Month of the Elderly”; Kendall then decided to make his visit an annual one.
Equipped with his guitar and his voice, Kendall gave a stellar performance of one of his many original pieces at the Archer’s Home for the Elderly, yesterday. The renowned musician related that the joy that he saw in these residents – joy through his music- brings him great happiness. He said that his drive is constantly being fueled by the joy that these residents experience through his music.
Calypso, a timely art form, has a reach that extends to many generations; and it can sometimes effect nostalgia in much of these older residents.
Kendall explained that the residents who are often plagued with feelings of hopelessness see happiness as a rarity. They feel as though age has taken that right to experience this particular emotion.
Many of them feel alone and neglected by their families and “Sweet Kendingo’s” music is a welcomed distraction.
His stage name ‘Sweet Kendingo’ was formed from the name ‘Kendall’ and him being born at Dingwall’, Corentyne – ‘Sweet Kendingo’.
Kendall, who has performed internationally, sees the aged society as an asset and not a liability. For the rest of the month he would be visiting the various homes for the seniors
