Dear Editor,
Sections of the Annai-Lethem road are currently in a deplorable state as a result of the May-June rains. Despite a multimillion dollar contract being inked since June 2018 for repairs to this stretch of road, nothing substantial has been done to date except for some minor emergency repairs.
In a news article carried in the Stabroek News on August 28, 2018 it was explained by the Region Nine Chairman, Mr. Bryan Allicock, that “road works were being effected as part of emergency maintenance in the hope of bringing some relief to drivers” but that he was uncertain when the “actual work” would commence on the Annai-Lethem road.
For the information of the Region Nine Chairman, the Minister of Public Works and the President of Guyana, the so called “emergency repairs” have brought little or no relief to drivers which begs the question of, ‘When will the actual maintenance commence?’
Drivers and commuters alike continue to suffer daily on this stretch of road but it seems like the government and the contractor are oblivious to our suffering.
A couple of weeks ago, when there were National Heritage Celebrations at Shulinab Village in the South Rupununi, there was a mad scramble to repair the road leading to that village due to the fact that the President was scheduled to attend the festivities there. Oh, how I wished the celebrations were in the North Rupununi so that the President could have travelled along the Annai-Lethem road to see and experience for himself the hardship users of this road are going through.
Mr. President, I personally implore you to look into this matter and to see it resolved soonest. Your subject Minister and the regional authorities of Region Nine, all seem to be at sea, floating in a tide of incompetence and inefficiency.
Take a minute to reflect on how quickly your government acted to fix the Kuru Kuru road after the residents there protested. Do we have to resort to such action for our voices to be heard?
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” is the subtle way that George Orwell in his famed book, Animal Farm put it. This seems to be particularly true in this situation.
Yours sincerely
J. Andries
