Dear Editor,
With the coming of oil, Guyana’s Parliamentarians will have a crucial role to play in ensuring the country’s oil revenue can be accounted for. As such, our MPs will need an understanding of what good governance requires in practice and they need to be trained and equipped with all the tools to get the job done.
The big question is, when will the Speaker of the House, Dr. Barton Scotland, and Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, get going with the necessary training for our MPs and the relevant Parliamentary staff?
I was surprised to learn from the Sunday publication of the Kaieteur News that the management of Parliament has not lifted a finger towards preparation for oil and gas. Are we really serious about ensuring transparency and accountability for this sector which is notorious for corruption?
Or are we interested in courting economic imbalances, political instability, and widening the loopholes for the heist of our resources? Only time will tell…
Yours sincerely
Concerned Guyanese
