I have been following with interest the exchanges in the media between the PPP and the AFC on the issue of irregularities in the identification and submission of candidates for the upcoming local government elections.
It is clear that the AFC is finding it difficult to get backers for their List of Candidates both at the Constituency and the Proportional Representation levels.
They have therefore resorted to all manner of skullduggery to get persons to back the lists as required by law.
This is particularly so in PPP strongholds where many of their erstwhile supporters have now openly identified themselves with the PPP.
I think that fraudulent and corrupt practices should, as it were, be nipped in the bud and not allowed to take root.
In this regard, I think in future elections, GECOM should publish the full list of candidates and their respective backers and allow for a period of no less than one week to sanitize the list. Further, persons who knowingly and purposefully engage in corrupt practices should be investigated, penalized and disbarred from participating in future elections.
The Guyana Elections Commission should also introduce an alphabetical method in the receipt of lists of candidates from representatives of the lists of contending parties or groups as opposed to the ‘first come, first serve’ method as is currently the case. This will avoid the tendency of parties to show up in the wee hours of the morning on nomination day to hand in their lists only to find that others were in the line since the day before. This is unnecessary and demeaning and could result in allegations of biases on the part of GECOM.
Democracy, whether at the local or at the national level, is too important to be tinkered with and every effort must be made by GECOM to ensure that there is full transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
