The Diamond/Golden Grove Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) held its first awards ceremony and dinner on Friday. The event was well attended by councillors, and staff, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) officials.
The event which was held at M and M Banquet Hall, Peters’ Hall, East Bank Demerara, sought to recognise persons from various sectors of society while at the same time updating the public as to the many achievements, challenges and future plans for the NDC.
Chairman of the evening’s proceeding and Councillor, Haimwatie Ghir-Somar, in presenting the bursary awards pointed out that it was the first time that the NDC had undertaken such an initiative, noting that it is their plan to make it an annual event as they seek to help advance education within the NDC.
She pointed out that after a search began to get the top five students, they were pleasantly surprised to learn that the five students were all of the Diamond Secondary which she said is testimony to the fact that the educational institution continues to hold its own among some of the nation’s top schools.
District Development Officer (DDO), Sherlock Hutson, speaking on behalf of the Regional Executive Officer (REO) Ms. Pauline Lucas, told those gathered that the RDC is fully aware of the state that the NDC was at when it was inherited by the present councillors.
He congratulated the NDC and its councillors stressing that they are fortunate to have a Chairman in Bharrat Narine whom he said is very professional and hardworking.
“Over the past three years, those of us who are actively involved in the administration of the Diamond Grove NDC would be very proud to be part of such a council. As such, this evening’s activity is a reflection of those persons who are proud to be part of the management of this NDC,” he said.
Copping this year’s awards were Darshnie Singh, Yashoda Persaud, Regina Hernandez, Harinauth Ramsaywack and Oma Arjun.
Arjun was adjudged the top student who gained eleven ones and five twos at the 2018 sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.
The inaugural winners of the Community Awards were New Diamond Grove Primary head teacher, Ms. Wendy Chichester, and Grove Primary head teacher, Ms. Desryn Richmond.
