Dressed in yellow, a colour that signifies fortitude and positivity, Ismay Springer a 105 year- old centenarian sat and reflected upon her existence on the earth. Yesterday, Miss Springer celebrated her 105th birthday surrounded by both family and friends.
Born on September 29, 1913, Ismay Springer was the eighth child to humble parents. Her upbringing was a simple one, void of modern luxuries or anything more than needed.
Minute provisions in her childhood home did not bother her as she was taught the concept of contentment, a concept that she later instilled into her nine children, six of whom are alive.
Springer during her younger years took on a variety of jobs to assist her husband, Bertie Springer, who was a cane farmer. She was enamored with her job as a mother.
Her daughter, Hazel David, a retired teacher, explained that their home was not financially perfect, but food and love were always there.
Ms. David related that she and her siblings were always happy; they did not yearn for excessive luxuries, they were con
tented, as their mother had taught them to be. The younger Springer would do domestic jobs to assist the family with added income.
The centenarian, still poised and fresh, smiled as her daughter recounted her experiences as a child. David emphasized on the simplicity in which her mother would live life. She credits that attitude for her mother’s longevity.
When asked about the most impactful event in her years, Springer’s daughter explained that her mother was devastated with the death of her husband. Springer’s husband who died 30 years ago was the main breadwinner of the family.
She saw an uncertain future, her daughter explained. In reality, it was actually the very opposite. Her children who had become adults, did not forget the love that their mother poured out so selflessly over the years.
They surrounded her with the very love that she gave without expecting a thing in return. Springer mothered children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Springer’s daughter explained that her mother, who was active up until her eyesight started to give her problems, would go to the market each day to prepare her food at home. This, David says, her mother’s value of simpler things is what she has to credit for her
long life.
Five years ago, Springer celebrated her 100th birthday. Nevertheless, she disclosed to her daughter’s husband that she did not feel as if she had lived for 100 years. She then further explained to him that it felt as if it was only yesterday that she was just a little girl going to school.
Ismay Springer who is a member of Plaisance Church of God, sees her spirituality as essential for longevity. She recounted her prayers as a young girl for a husband who would be good to her, a prayer that God answered.
A line taken from renowned poet Emily Dickenson -‘Tis centuries and yet, feels shorter than a day’ is enough to grasp Ismay Springer’s perspective on her more than a century long existence.
