The truck driver who reversed out of his yard on Friday last and struck and killed a passing motorcyclist on the public road has not been charged as yet.
This is because the police are awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). According to ‘B’ Division Commander Assistant Commissioner Clifton Hicken, a file is being prepared to be sent to the Director of Pubic Prosecution for advice.
In the meanwhile, the truck driver Mohandass Meenkum, called “Marvin”, 36, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice has been placed on $100,000 station bail.
A police release stated that Meenkum was reversing Motor Canter GWW 1831, onto to the public road when it struck Guysuco Field Superintendent Rajendranauth Haroldsingh, called Jerry, 52, of Lot 28 Reliance Abandon, East Canje Berbice.
Singh a father of two attached to the Special Purposes Unit (SPU) of the Rose Hall Estate was reportedly on his way home around 12:30 hrs on motorcycle CF 1615 when he was struck.
Singh had just finished supervising workers in the backdam and was heading home when he was struck by the Canter.
He was hurled to the opposite side of the road. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he succumbed.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body by Dr Vivikanand Brijmohan at the New Amsterdam Hospital gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries. The man had a number of broken ribs, which caused severe internal injuries.
Singh leaves to mourn his wife, his two children, his ailing father, one brother and two sisters and many other relatives.
