Recent reports have identified a surge in cancer cases globally. Locally, Guyana has seen an increase in the mortality rate of prostate cancer. The Cancer Institute of Guyana (CIG)- geared in providing advanced oncology care for its patients- sees systematic early screening as vital for an early diagnosis and a higher probability for survival.
Guyana, being subjected to the many disadvantages that come with being a Third World developing country, one being-the hurdles that are often encountered in controlling cancer in such a demographic.
The World Health Organization in its fight to control cancer sees four major aspects as crucial: cancer prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and palliation..
A major hindrance that developing countries often have in controlling cancer is the lack of reliable cancer statistics. The absence of a reliable source of case reference, can stymie the growth of a country’s oncology care; a lack of active conscientious efforts to record statistics is equivalent to discrepancies in any source of data.
CIG’s medical outreach director, Dr. Syed Ghazi, and oncologist Dr. Sayan Chakroborty, emphasized the need for a fresh approach as well as awareness amongst members of society. They reiterated the concept of cancer as a disease that varies in its modus operandi, with each type having a unique way of advancing in stages.
With an increase in cases of cervical cancer, cancer of the breast and prostate cancer, screening is becoming even more pertinent. Women are becoming even more susceptible to cancers; cancer is becoming a commonality nationwide.
Dr. Ghazi explained the beginning of CIG. “We saw the need for accurate cancer care…That is the reason why the Cancer Institute of Guyana is here, we want to be able to give that care that is often sought after.”
Dr.Ghazi in an evaluation of Guyana’s oncology care said that the country has gone a long way saying, “We are halfway there. We are getting there. Things have progressed.” The medical outreach director did not hesitate to make mention to the socio-cultural aspect that often plagues the male demographic, an aspect that causes them to shy away from taking heed to the many warning signs that are often seen.
Men develop predilections that have led them to ignore their needs health-wise. This has led to the increase in prostate cancer.
