The Ministry of Public Health has embarked on a venture that will seek to decrease the rate of maternal deaths within Guyana as the quality of childcare and maternal care increases.
In a ceremony on Wednesday, at the Indigenous People’s Residence, the Ministry declared open a rehabilitated waiting home for Region Four- a venture aimed at decreasing maternal deaths.
Residents of outlying areas have experienced a number of maternal deaths due to inadequate health workers at the appointed time. It has also been a common complaint for high risk expectant mothers to experience a lack of medical resources during the last term of their pregnancies.
A combination of a lack of medical resources and health workers in an area that is remote can be dangerous, particularly for high-risk pregnant women. Complications may arise at any given time, without the necessary resources to handle that complication.
Consequently, the Ministry in its quest to provide adequate healthcare to all Guyanese, with the help of the Ministry of Finance and the International Development Bank, will construct waiting homes across Guyana.
The concept of maternity waiting homes encompasses the use of a facility to affect the rate of maternal deaths. It allows expectant mothers whether it is from outlying regions, to travel to Georgetown several weeks before their expected delivery to receive healthcare, to be monitored, and to avoid complications.
MOPH has recognized the need for Guyana to amplify the level of interest that is shown towards the maternal aspect of healthcare. This initiative will allow increased access to health services to persons residing in remote areas.
Delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony was Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence. She reiterated the need for quality healthcare in maternal and childcare. “Access to quality maternal healthcare is crucial for the furtherance of a sustainable environment.”
Her emphasis on the need for monitoring pregnant women who are at high-risk conveyed a genuine sense of urgency. MOPH’S goal is to rehabilitate and expand maternity waiting homes around the country as well as to affect a major decrease in maternal deaths countrywide.
The efficacy of maternity homes in developing countries is significant in all aspects, as it strives to maintain the highest caliber of maternal care. (Tracey T. Squires)
