Vendors of the Stabroek Market Wharf continue to ply their trade on the otherwise perilous structure despite warnings from the Mayor and City Council to desist.
The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) had posted several advertisements in various sections of the media outlining the danger that the wharf now poses and informing the public of its closure. While the notice warned persons not to venture to that section of the market, it did not prohibit entry.
The notice instead doubled as a disclaimer, where the Council “disclaims any liability for any loss, damage, injury, death to anyone defying this warning.”
Town Clerk Royston King had said that the Council would have had talks with the vendors who were being cooperative, and expressed to them that they would need to be patient and grant the council some four weeks to prepare the area.
This was much to the disapproval of the vendors who are crying that it is clear that King expects them to starve as there is no way it would be possible for them to completely close shop for four weeks as the Town Clerk asked.
“Me cyan go and tell GPL that meh close down; me gotta get money.”
The vendors expressed their frustration with the current situation but opined that they cannot do better. This is because the area earmarked for them to occupy over what is expected to be a two-year period, is yet to be prepared.
Following an engineer’s report certifying that the wharf is unfit for human occupation and business, the Council took moves to have the wharf vacated, thus displacing a number of persons who ply their trade there.
They had indicated an area for the vendors to occupy; however to date, the designated area is yet to be prepared, but the deadline for vendors to vacate the wharf has long since passed and steps have been taken by the Council to begin locking down the wharf.
The Council has stated that the wharf will be completely closed off to human traffic this week.
